FCDO's WASH Systems for Health Programme (WS4H) aims to support government-led initiatives to accelerate progress in their WASH priorities. The theory of change (TOC) sets out change pathways to drive performance improvements in focus WASH systems building blocks at national and selected sub-national levels to contribute to increased access and use of sustainable, inclusive and climate-resilient WASH services. Through collective actions with government and stakeholders, this will contribute to a progressive reduction in WASH-related diseases, particularly for women, children and infants in underserved, climate-vulnerable locations in Bangladesh and Nepal. In Bangladesh, we will work with rural Union Parishad and urban Municipality governments across two climate-vulnerable Upazilas (sub-districts) and at the national level to operationalize the National Strategy for Water Supply and Sanitation (NSWSS 2021) and support the transition to safely managed service levels for rural water supply and small-town sanitation. The project will work with mandated institutions, including Department for Public Health Engineering (DPHE) and Local Government Institutions (LGIs), as well as private sector and community organizations to demonstrate models for safely managed, climate resilient WASH services; increase women's leadership for WASH to improve gender responsiveness; expand use of the Integrated Municipal Information System (IMIS) and participatory mechanisms for planning, financing, monitoring and regulating inclusive and resilient WASH services; and utilize learning platforms for replication and policy improvements. In Nepal, we will strengthen systems for decentralized WASH service delivery, focusing on safely managed, gender-responsive sanitation and hygiene service delivery in rural areas by leveraging the legal, political and institutional mechanisms that can support the three autonomous tiers of government to connect and function effectively as a system. The approach aims to improve system performance at the federal level, within two targeted provinces, and with one target District Coordination Committee (DCC) in each province. It will involve supporting the development of provincial legal frameworks for WASH, working with local governments in two provinces to prepare and utilize data-driven WASH plans and budgets, improving public finance flows, and building capacities for political advocacy by civil society networks and local government for prioritization and commitment for WASH at all levels

The project increases retention of adolescent girls and girls with disabilities for education with inclusive WASH services and menstrual health by empowering them to raise their voices to address socio-cultural and economic barriers; to strengthen duty bearers to ensure they prioritise education and inclusive WASH facilities with adequate resources, gender sensitive plans and policies for increased participation of adolescent girls and those with disabilities in education in schools. By 2025, targeted adolescent girls and boys; and children with disabilities (CWD) aged 11-20 will have an improved and more gender responsive and inclusive school and wider enabling learning environment.

WaterAid will support 29,419 schoolchildren and teachers gain access to inclusive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services enhancing gender equality in 104 schools in Nepal. Women and Girls at school and 9,753 members of the community will be empowered to manage menstruation hygienically and with dignity. This will include improved WASH facilities, raised awareness, affordable supply chains for sanitary materials and increased institutional accountability

WaterAid has worked in Nepal since 1986, working with seven partner organisations to provide safe water, improved sanitation and hygiene. WaterAid's work with partner NEWAH has resulted in helping more than 3% of the rural population access these basic services.

This grant supports the three countries of India, Nepal and Bangladesh. The child rights based programme aims to work with WASH from a child rights perspective to improve services and practices for realising children's rights to survival and development on an equitable basis at household and community level.

Our aim is to ensure universal and lasting access to water and sanitation and hygiene as fundamental human rights. Unrestricted funding is essential to the way we work; It provides us with the flexibility to carry out work that is not covered by grants restricted to specific projects. This enables us to be more innovative, and work on activities that are crucial in maximising our impact but may produce results that are hard to measure. For example, it can help us to empower communities, support inclusion, and influence decision makers such as local and national government. It can be used to build the capacity of our staff and partner organisations, to monitor, research and learn from our work and share learning with others. Finally, it provides our programmes with financial sustainability to ensure critical work can continue where there are funding gaps and unexpected costs.

This is a 2.5 year project as part of the long term earthquake response programme. If the donor commits, he will support our work in 2 districts where we plan to reach 16,049 people with access to safe water, 11,064 with access to latrines and 17,790 with hygiene education.

Short term and long term emergency support following the earthquake in Nepal. Short term support includes safe water provision, temporary latrines, hygiene kits and hygiene awareness raising. Long term rehabilitation details will be confirmed in due course via a consultant in Nepal.

Project based in Hardeni VDC, Udaypur district, eastern region Nepal - a remote rural hill area. Transforming lives in 6 communities and three schools through improving access to safe water and hygiene, and sustaining progress already made in sanitation in the VDC (which was declared ODF in 2012). The project will enable 2,765 people to access safe water through 6 gravity flow schemes, and hygiene education through community health and hygiene campaigns. To sustain improved sanitation, households will be supported to improve latrines and environmental sanitation. The V-WASH-CC will be supported to maintain the VDC's ODF status. The budget includes funds for sustainability support to continue until March 2018 - these funds will be received in 2015/16 and carried forward to following years.

Transforming lives in poor and marginalized communities and one school through improving access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. The project will enable 5,200 people to access safe water and 2,800 people to access sanitation and hygiene.
